My boyfriend wants to take my surname when we get married next year how do we go about the name change

Changing The Man's Name
There is of course no reason why your husband should not change his name to your maiden name upon marriage. If you plan on doing this, you simply continue using your maiden name after marriage. However, your husband will need to take additional steps to change his name.

Most simply, your husband can just start using his new name after your marriage. However, if he wishes to get all his records and documents changed without any problems or delays (for example, his passport and records such as income tax, national insurance, bank and building society accounts), he should execute a change of name by Deed Poll (see footnote below).

A teacher at my sons primary school changed his name when he got married to his wifes name. Sorry I don't know how he did it, but it is certainly possible, and the answer by Ethel seems reasonable enough to me!

It seems very discriminatory that the man would have to go thru the deed poll procedure when all a woman has to do is produce her marriage certificate. Poor men eh

Using Deed Poll is very expensive - around �400 when I enquired a few yrs ago. A cheaper way to do it is by a Statutory Declaration which my son did. It cost around �40 (inc solicitor) seven yrs ago in London. A solicitor will help you with this.
