Audio Latency with Sonar and Edirol Sound Canvas

Hi all.

I have a small problem. I have a brand new PC which is (I feel) medium/high spec.

I have an Edirol SC-D70 sound canvas with USB2.0 connection.

I am running a legit copy of Sonar 5.

What I am struggling with is major audio latency!! I can either have the settings on fast (in which case I get lots of unwanted noise and hangups) or I can have the settings on safe (in which case there is a massive delay between me pressing a key on the keyboard(musical one) and hearing the sound)

I have altered the settings both interally (via Control Panel) and also through the program itself.

I can't belive it is a hardware issue - any ideas??

Thanks
