I have decided to repair my old mountian bike, and it needs pretty much everything replacing.

I have taken everything off except the pedels and chain / gear mechanism.

How do i get the chain off?

How do i get the pedels off? There seems to be an alan key type nut holding them on, but it is so tight.

Any recommendations of where to buy cheap but quality bicycle spares?

Hey to take off the chain you need a "chain tool" which you clip onto the bike chain and twist it and it pushed the peg out of one of the links for you to undo the chain...and to put it back on you do it in reverse - where the peg is pushed out the other side you use the chain tool and twist it to push the pin back in...if that makes any sence...
here is a bicycle chain tool - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-BICYCLE-CHAIN-LINK-T OOL_W0QQitemZ150011042627QQihZ005QQcategoryZ10 9122QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
They are pretty cheap to get.
As for the pedals you need an adjustable spanner and just undo them as you would a normal nut - the nut is properly fixed in/ attached to the pedal so it will unscrew out of the pedal arms and not out of just the pedal...

Or take alook at the back or an MTB magazine under secondhand, you may find a bargain.
And then theres ebay .
Pedals are turned the opposite way to a normal nut. E.g. clockwise to untighten...

Otherwise they'd fall off when you pedalled.
Gandy , only on one side , surely !
chains dont always have to be cut. some have a master link, it looks different from the rest and is easy to see. if you find it, you just pry the side off with a small screwdriver.
The peal on the right hand side has a 'normal' thread and the left hand one turns the opposite way.
