If I send in tokens to a newspaper to win a prize and I also enter online, do both methods have equal chance of winning. I mean it is not like pulling one out of a hat is it, how are they combined? I am assuming only one prizewinner

They are supposed to have an equal chance of winning or the competition becomes illegal leading to large fines for the organiser.

How they achieve it I've no idea.

Thanks, I know the possibilities are supposed, legally, to be equal BUT I still would like to know HOW this is acheived. How can on-line entries and posted entries be amalgamated. I can see they just pick out a posted entry till they get a correct one. I also assume that the computer entries are automatically sorted so only correct entries remain... same with passwords and token entries, but then what?
