From what the guide told me when I was on holiday in Luxor, in the great tombs, the Egyptians used to paint on top of a layer of plaster. Thye used paints made mixing water, gum and metal pigments such as blue and green copper sediment, and got yellows and reds from iron. Real gold leaf was used extensively in the royal tombs.
