Vw polo key

have recently bought a vw polo from an auction, 2001 'Y ' reg, and was only supplied with one key. I've asked the local vw dealership and they have quoted �120 for a new one. The key that I have is just a bog standard car key no remote. my question is, should there be a remote key for the car and is the one that I have just the spare ? Thanks Mel.

Most modern keys contain a transponder which de-activates the immobiliser. They look just like a bog standard key but have to be coded to match the car. When you buy the key, you must take the car with you so that the car and key can be synchronised. That's why they are expensive

thats the standard price for a key. Ford charge �150. If you do get it less than �120 it wont be much less.

I recently tried to get a new key for a VW van and was quoted �18 on the phone.
Got to dealership, and was �18+VAT for key, then �55+VAT to encode the key - approx �86 in the end
But... we faxed an order through for 2 keys and they 'conveniently' lost the page that ordered 2, so only had 1 when I got there. I sat around for about 1.5hrs while they sorted it out, only to then be told the key didn't fit, despite having given them reg no., chasis no. etc so they'd get the right one. They said someone must have changed the locks - but we hadn't and it was their demonstrator previously!
Sorry. Rant over. ****** me off is all. I think you can get them done at Timpsons (or some other key cutting place), but they'll still charge a lot for them because of the encoding.

I bought one for my Bora last week, which is quite a large fob,and it was �103 for the key, and �43 to encode it.

like i said, if you get it cheaper it wont be for much less than �120. Ugly_bobs cost him �101.05 including the VAT (�86 ex vat)

I would have said that the new key should cost you about �100 from VW.

You say you have a Y reg Polo. I think it is only the 1.6 GTI on this shape Polo that has a remote locking key. If not, some 1.4 SE models may have had one too. Anyway, my point is that if you have a remote key, then the part needs to be ordered, and upon collection from the parts dept, you'll need to book it in with the service dept to have the new key coded. This takes half an hour or so and you will need to sacrifice both your new key and car for this time.

If your Polo doesn't have remote central locking then the new key shouldn't cost you more than about �40.

How can you tell? Well, is your spare key a remote key or not.
