how are businesses allocated an address with a "continuinig number" ie - 1-5 or 123-129 is it on the size of their premises?

i think some must be where a few old buildings have been demolished and commercial offices have been built in there place, therefore taking in the address of the previous buildings.

Or knock a couple of terraced houses or cottages into one. Interestingly, Norwich Union insurance computers can't handle the idea!
