How does a car choke work, and why is it needed?

the choke on a car is simply to let the driver regulate the mixture of air/petrol and make this mixture richer when the engine is cold and needs a stonger mixture to burn properly and give power right away rather than waiting for the car to heat up......on nearly all modern cars the system is fully automatic.
the reason why it's called a choke is because it chokes the air out of the mix; [giving a richer mixture, a sft42 said]
