Does anyone know of anyway of getting sponsorship for events (eg: sporting events) on a small scale (local football team or martial art exhibitions etc)?

My uncle runs his own solicitors firm and he sponsers his local football team, so they have his name on there footy shirts, from what he said the football team approached him with the suggestion,i think the only thing he asked them beforhand was how thay had been doing and up and coming matches things like that. Might not be any help but I would suggest contacting some local companies and some larger ones with details of how you have been doing and where there logo would be displayed.
Very awkward to say the least......i know this through past experience....the best bet is the direct approach with a standard letter outlining your event and how sponsoring it will benefit the company involved showing what media coverage if any this will get their name....a good bet is your local newspaper which will be able to help by placing a story along with (hopefully) a photo...they should do this as they are always struggling to fill the pages......you will find most small companies will be told by their accountant to spend a few pounds each year on sponsorship....don't know why must be for tax reasons.....give it a try at your local library looking through a trade directory.
I think that most large companies have an annual budget for this sort of thing and most small companies have never even thought about it. If you know anyone, especially someone with influence, in a company, try to solicit their help to make an approach to the decision makers. Bear in mind that most companies get many requests for cash from local organisations and charities so you need to think of a good approach, especially to highlight how your particular team / event might benefit the sponsor.
I agree with ANUSHKA. My school's football teams are sponsored by a local solicitors firm (small town, population about 10000). They pay for the shirts etc. and have their name on them.
