Can a PC base unit switch itself off if it is left idle (even if System Shutdown is on 'Never')?

Yes, if there is a problem with the PC overheating for instance, it will automatically shut down as a safety measure.
Or if your mains power drops out for a second or three.
there have been various virus/ worms/trojans rtc over the years that have caused this, not to mention PC malfunction, motherboard of AC power unit faults
no shortage of candidates really
yes as mine does. read somewhere that its like going into hibernation.
