Do any of you other ladies come across this?

I'm not much of a feminist but it irks me in my job when assumptions are made mostly because you're female.

People who know me or who I do work for aren't a problem but i find it amazing these days how people assume I'm a secretary when I pick up the phone because i'm female. Although when they ask "are you so and so's secretary" and I reply very calmly "no i'm a solicitor" the embarassed silence is kinda amusing.

At my last place, when i started a large number of people in another department assumed I was the new secretary an even worse for a guy of the same age who I was on an equal standing to.

I worked with him and another guy and we went to a wedding reception for a client together. On being introduced to the groom he greeted the two guys then asked which one I was with.

I know it doesn't help that I look a lot younger than I am and I've nothing against secretaries I used to be one and have a fantastic one myself as I used to be one but it is still annoying.

Do you other girls find this?

...don't worry your pretty little head about it...

(that's a joke... please don't take me to court!)... : )
I know exactly what you mean Jenna. I'm a woman and often get mistaken for the personal assistant or the secretary - no criticism of secretaries or PA's intended btw !!! The assumptions are often very close to home - this is one of my early posts on this very site and people here assumed I was a man, simply because I had a secretary. Doh.

Jenna, get back to the kitchen instead of wasting your time on here

lol @ snagged :)
I have this too not with the people i employ but with clients who asume im the secretary just because i answer the phone on my new enquiry line. they generally speak to me like dirt and think i am incapable of helping them with their situation. I do put them back in their place by responding with its my company and im a detective so i agree with the . embarassed silence.

however my partner and the operatives my partner and i employ are always treated with the 3 bags full treatment. i do get my own back as when the person who has treated me (like something on the bottom of their shoe) and they need to organise things need updates i tell them the file is unavaliable for a week. hahahaa :P

ps: i find it very annoying and also have nothing against secretaries but it does really f**K me off

Zorro honey...i'll smack you with my frying pan....
phew... glad you lol... re-reading it I thought it might have been too much... : )
We had a door smah at work a few weeks ago and when the guy came to fix it he asked who he should speak to and when I said me, he rolled his eyes and laughed. Then when I assured him I was who he needed to speak to, I handed him some boxes to chuck the glass into quite frostily, then asked him if there was anything else he needed. He said a cup of tea love, and smacked my arse. I was horrified but figured other than saying "dont touch me again! " There was no point arguing with him anymore, however his chauvinism persued throughout the day when he kept telling the guys what was happening instead of me. So I phoned the company he worked for and told them he was bang out of order.
I still havent heard anything back though : S
Yeah 'Goodsoulette', but isn't there plenty of your @rse to smack? (your words not mine from a prev. post!)... not that I've been thinkin' about it or anything (eyes glazeover... drools...) : )

Ohh, on a similar note I was sitting in a cafe minding my own business when an older man, complete stranger came and sat by me and started chatting.

He started by slagging off lawyers after asking what I did which I thought was a bit rude, especially as he'd come to talk to me, but kept a polite silence and listened to his opinion.

He then asked me when the diet was starting as no bloke would want to walk down the aisle with "some fat bird"!!! I was shocked into silence!!! I was a size 12-14 at the time.
I'm sorry... that was before I knew you... : )

...you'll be hearing from my solicitor...
What do you call 50 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean..........

................a good start
lol... I love it. Guys are egits. When I was 18 and used to work in a pub, I went up to an old man and asked him if he was being served, he said yeah that fat girl over there is serving me, pointing at my mate. He didnt stop there told me she should think about joing weight watchers. She was about 5'6" and a size 14 tops , not fat enough to be called fat by a stranger.
Oh and snagged lets clear this up I never used the phrase "theres plenty of my arse to smack", just in case my mum pops on and reads any of this.
that's true 'goodsoulette'... but everythings cool with your mum... I just rolled over and asked her!...

(sorry!)...
