Does mains water entering a house go straight to the taps or does it go up to your loft tank?

As I recall, but my regulations knowledge is well out of date:
The first feed should be directly off the rising main and this is the only guaranteed potable supply.
Normally all other feeds are from stored water if you have it but you can feed all outlets from the rising main if the correct non-return valves are used.
Check with a qualified plumber!

Normally cold water feeds straight to the taps, and a feed is taken to a tank in the loft to supply the header tank for central heating, on an old fashioned (ie not combi) system.
Occasionally a tank is used to supply cold wataer to the hot water tank, to be warmed up, thus maintaining pressure in the hot system.
