Electrical substation bits?

Does anyone know what those ceramic looking coil type things are that you see lots of in electrical substations? They are often a grey or maroon colour. What is their proper name and what are they for?

They are insulators (do not conduct electricity) and are used to attach the live cables to their (hopefully) non-live fixtures. They are very noticeble on pylons where they are used to suspend the live cables. I think they are just called 'Ceramic Insulators'.
