I'm thinking of purchasing a VHS video that I can't buy here in the UK. My question is: Will an Australian PAL VHS video work on my VCR here in the UK.

most definitely. australia uses exactly the same tv system that we use over here.
I think I am correct in thinking that any PAL tape will play fine on any PAL machine because as "software" it is non-specific to PAL variants (will do all). The compatibility problem arises between player and TV monitor only because when played the content on the tape is converted to an analogue signal which is configured differently in different PAL systems - just the same way as the broadcast signal is so configured.
