I've tried using a cassette adaptor which sounds terrible and an fm transmiter which just sounds like a dodgy radio station. does anyone know of a way that i can connect my ipod to my car stereo with a decent sound. It's a mk4 golf with orginal cd system if that makes any difference.

Try Halfords ,they have a good range of in-car ipod connection through your stereo system and can produce very good sound quality.
Try here - i've bought three from them in the past - easy to install and the quality is second to none :

Depending on your car and stereo you can even change the volume etc using your steering wheel controls and also have the track & artist displayed in the car's stereo or other display.
Volkswagen do an official mounted dock within the glovebox for the ipod....its about 200 fitted.

What FM transmitter are you using though...I brought an iTrip and that seems to work fine..but it is dependant on you finding an empty frequency on your radio.

Thanks for all of your answers, some interesting options to look at there! I work for a company who make some fm transmitters so got this from work fairly cheaply but I don't really want to be spending money on things that will have the same kind of effect. Think I'll pay the extra and have VW fit a dock for me. Thanks again for all your answers!
