First ,ignore the decimal point until the end,do the sum:

also ignore the zero at the end of the 1.20, it's not significant

240 x 12 = 288

Then add in the decimal point again

answer is 288.0 or just 288

Easy!
The way I think about this is that you have to remove the decimal point , do the multiplication and then put it back in the right place in the answer.

So in your example

240 x 1.20

well that's the same as 240 x 1.2 isn't it because that 0 at the end isn't doing anything

well

240 x 1.2

Imagine it's 240 x 12 that's

240X10 = 2400
plus 240X2 = 480
-----------------------
2880

but we didn't want x12 we wanted x1.2 we made it 10 times bigger so now we make the answer 10 times smaller

2880 divided by 10 is 288

which is your answer

Think of it as "borrowing moves of the decimal place" and paying them back at the end

Does that help any?
Buy a calculator.
Good point,

Gef did and now he can do sums that add up to over twenty without being arrested for exposing himself!

First of all, what is 'timsing'?

Secondly, as you are obviously under the age of five, perhaps you'd better get Mummy or Daddy to do it for you.
