Wireless router

I am loooking to buy a wireless router my PC. Main telephone socket is downstairs and PC is in the office upstairs. I understand a router is a wise choice. I am currently running broadband with Pipex through a telephone extension lead and the connection is not brilliant. What type of router would i need? From what i have read they are all different. Can someone please help?
