I was there this morning and I saw a signpost for the City Centre. I laways thought Reading was a large town and that to be a city you had to have a cathedral.

I always thought Reading was a town, but there you go. Not all cities have cathedrals and not all towns with cathedrals are cities. It just requires that city status is given by a letters patent apparently.

Reading is indeed a large town which has applied for city status in both 2000 and 2002 but failed on both occasions.

i dont think there are ANY cities in berkshire
It depends on how picky you are on defining a city, whether by formal status or just a vaguely large town.

I suspect the local council jumped the gun on its city status application and hasn't bothered to change the signs....
What does it matter?
idont suppose it "matters" in the grand scheme of the world, or when set against something like a war or famine but dont you just ever get those little annoying things that bug your brain till you get an answer, panic button?
I've always heard that you have to have a court house to be considered a city.
