maintenance

I have a very good and very efficient dvd player/recorder which I have had for about two years and have not had any trouble with it. However various "experts" have suggested that I should purchase a " laser lens cleaning kit" to keep it in optimum condition.I am sure I have read somewhere that these kits can also be damaging and that some machines have their own cleaning facilities. Can anyone help with this?

Ethel; I have a Phillips recorder which must be a different model to yours because my manual suggests using a lens cleaner as a last resort. dilligaf; to answere your question, they were not salesmen but suggested "They knew a bit about these things". However I think I'll take the advice of you both and not waste money on a lens cleaner. Thank you again very much.
