It depends if there are any loose wires coming out of the car from the phone kit its self. if there is more than one wire, it will depend what make of phone kit it is as to what colour of wire you need to connect the wire from the stereo to. If it is an Autoleads kit the mute wire should be blue, Parrot kit can be blue white or yellow depending on kit, motorola kit is green, prowave is usually pink or brown. If it is ant other kit im not sure, so it realy does depend on the make and exactly what spare wires you have coming from the car if any. Hope this might help!

Thanks for that mr jester, its a nokia car kit and it's a yellow single wire from the phone that I must connect to somewhere on the radio, I can't see where it has come from.
could you tell me what make and possibly model of stereo you have in the car.
Question Author
It's a Ford Mondeo Mk 3 with a standard 3000 radio/cd
On the back of the stereo there should be 3 plugs, One with 7 connectors, one with 6 & one with 8. Not all the connectors will have wire in them. Hold the stereo so that the plugs are from left to right 7,6,8. The mute wire connects to the small plug with 6 connectors 3rd hole down from the top, There wont be a wire in this hole.

Mr Jester your a Star, what can I say, that advice was spot on, many thanks.
I had tried all those hole's but I don't think I had shoved the wire in far enough, I made a new end on the wire and followed what you said and when it worked I jumped for joy.
A really big thank you.
