electrical devices on planes

We are traveling to Spain with my 3 year old daughter. To make the 2 hour flight easier I thought I would take along our small portable dvd player (with headphones) to keep little one occupied. My husband insists we will not be allowed to use this on the flight. He says personal walkmans, portable dvd players etc are banned from flights because they may mess with the planes controls. Is this true?

this is not true. You are allowed to use them but not during take off and landing.

Just to back up Hawkwalk's answer:

I got home about an hour ago from Stansted airport, having taken a day trip with Ryanair. The recorded announcements on the plane specifically stated that electronic equipment (other than mobile phones) may be used on board, except, as HW states, during take-off and landing. Almost everyone around me, on the flight from Charleroi, seemed to be working on their laptops or watching movies on their media players. It was only when we prepared for landing that the cabin crew went round asking people to turn those devices off.

last trip before they pull out of Charleroi, Chris? And before they introduce a charge for checking in, which I see is their next cute moneymaking device. (Not for online bookings with carry-on luggage only, though.)

Anyway, I never check-in at the airport (or take hold baggage). I always use the online facility.
