Divide 8 by 40 and times the answer by 100, thats your percentage.
Question Author
how on earth do i do that on paper?
8/40
Divided top and bottom by 8
= 1/5

1/5 x 100
= 20

Answer 20%
40 divided by 8 = 5.

100 divided by 5 = 20.

Answer = 20%
on paper use long division.

failing that easier to buy a calculator for a few quid nowadays .
Cannot see lukey being on to a winner here.

If you cant cope with 8 out of40. how on earth can you cope with 8,57 out of 16.90.
You don't need to buy a calculator - all windows pcs come with a calculator.
don't they teach simple arithmetic in schools these days? if you have a test and you can't do simple calcs like this then I'd give up mate if I was you!
stop scolding lukey. they needed help and was not ashamed to ask for it. it's better they ask rather than stay ignorant.
good luck on your test lukey!

Many thanks for your answers guys I think Im getting it now. Losehead, thanks for your support you would make a great father or teacher. (Why did you even bother replying)
I replied because I'm shocked that you appear to have gone through basic arithmetic training unscathed. Why are you doing a test when clearly you missed all the training that normally would preceed it? How old are you? Over 11?
Try thinking of it like this

Divide 40 by 100 = 0.40 yes? this is 1% of 40

now how many 1%s (40p) go into 8?

well it's 8 divided by 0.4
8 / 0.4 is the same as 80 / 4 (I just multiplied the top and bottom by 10 to make the artithmetic clearer see?)

80 / 4 = 20

so it's 20%

Does that help?

Loosehead you replied because you are a bully. Obviously you dont understand how this site works. If you cant answer the question then you should remain silent. Did you have a troubled upbringing, lacking in encouragement and love.
Well I have over 5000 replies to my name so I think I do have some idea how the site works. I don't think most on here who I have helped would consider me a bully. I suppose I'm really just curious as to how you managed to avoid doing any simple arithmetic at school. If you are still at junior school then I apologise, just trying to understand. Now how old did you say you were?
Question Author
I am still at junior school so I accept your apology, however that is besides the point. I highly doubt you have over 5000 replies to your name. If this is true, are they all as good as the reply you gave me? You should not have replied to 5000 people, you are a disgrace to the answerbank, you do not give correct answers, you abuse people, I personally think you should be banned from the site altogether.
Don't be ashamed Lukey and ignore Loosehead.

I am in the same boat. I hate maths of all kinds and I have to do percentages for my job. mind you I use a calculator and I have instructions written down on how to calculate.
Well it seems the new Sports section does have it's uses.

see the No of posts in this question:

I said I did more that 5000 posts not helped 5000 people but hey I didn't expect much. Anyway as you are a child I forgive your tantrum, good luck with the test. Tell you what why don't you ask another question, I'll see if I can help

Oh and funny girl, this is barely maths, just simple arithmetic. Yes arithmetic is a branch of maths, but it's bit like saying pumping up your tyre is motor engineering.
LOSEHEAD With regard to your answer "this is barley maths Im afraid youre now the one that needs help love. For your information this is a very big part of maths. I am a maths teacher and this is a major part in my maths lessons. Why must you put down everyone in your answers, you are a sad sad man. At least now you know percentages are part of maths, Im glad I could help. Your welcome.
Don't know about the maths.................but some of the spelling and grammar in the 'adult' responses could do with a bit of attention.............
