road trip to auschwitz

Ok heres a tricky one for you..next sept my brother and i are planning to travel by car from dorset across northern france via the normandy beaches, into germany and down into poland to the auschwitz museum, neither my brother or i have even been abroad before, but we feel this is something we both want to do.
All im asking for here is basically any info you think might be useful..websites, popular routes to take, info on campsites in both france & germany and any other useful tips on driving across europe. we want to try and take in as much history as possible along the way, hence the journey by car. so anything useful here would be very much appreciated! thanks.
