Can you get really loud ringers for landline phones? My grandmother is very deaf, and even when the volume control's turned up, and she can visually see if someone's phoning, she often misses the call. I notice that in phone shops, the ring's always loud, because of the crowds who go in. Can you buy something to amplify the sound? Thanks.

Hi Kyra! Thanks - we'll have to try and get some huge amplification for my grandmother. At the moment she'd hardly hear Big Ben. She DID use some sort of enhancement which you plugged into the socket, but it still wasn't loud enough. Apart from that - tired, but fine, get the email?

Hello maplin sells a range of phones and phone amplifier gadgets. You can see them on their website www.maplin.co.uk One of the amplifiers also has a large flashing light on it. Hope that might help.

You can contact her local council and they should have a deaf and hard of hearing team that can help they also might have a flashing light that goes off in the home to tell her when the phone is rining. and special loops systems for it as well as amplifiers.

I work in social services for the elderly and regularly take referrals from people with hearing problems.

Confused - You do a worthwhile job, and yes, I know there's help to be had in the line you suggested, but unfortunately, my grandmother won't entertain anyone from the Social Services trying to help! She's a very independent lady who's never had to use the system. A prize example is when someone said they'd heard she had some wonderful bats in her house. "Rats?!!" she screeched - and saw the person off!!!!

At the risk of sounding stupid, surely she won't be able to hear the person on the other end if she needs a really loud ringer?

Reminds me of the Rowan Atkinson sketch where he had a flashing light on his phone then just said "hello, hello?" as he couldn't hear the other person.

Lovely sketch wasn't it?!! Lol - but yes, my grandmother can hear most of the conversation over the phone. It must be certain pitches that she can't deal with very well. Mind you, her last conversation with my sister went something like:
"Are you keeping alright?" "Fight? What fight?" "No - I just wanted to ask...." "Don't you swear at ME!"
Bless her - that was a joke, but seriously, it's just the low-level ringing bit which she has the most difficulty with, so again - thanks all, I'll look into things for her.

if ur gran is with bt she can get a free tone caller which amplifies the phone they have a special age and disibility department
