My washing maching sounds like it is about to take off on the spin. It rattle's like mad. Occasionally mid-noise spin it will go quite for a few seconds/minutes before resuming it's noisy spin again. Is it time for a new one or can this be fixed? Thank you

Sounds like the bearings have gone - expensive and therefore probably terminal from a practical point of view.

Comet here I come.
Many washing machines have a large concrete block bolted to the inside, non-rotating part of the drum to dampen the vibrations from the spin cycle. If the bolts work lose, the block makes a horrible rattling noise on spin. If you are handy with a screwdriver, pop the back or top off and check that the bolts are done up tight.
It's not often the bearings as they tend to last forever these days.
