I have put a load of stuff on Ebay to sell. 3 items sold, and I got an email from PayPal saying funds had been received but my Paypal account is empty. When I go into Ebay and click on the "View Paypal Payment" link, it takes me to a page saying that in order to claim the money, I need to sign up...but I already have a Paypal account!! I have tried phoning Paypal, but can't get through, and I haven't had a reply to the email I sent. Now, I changed my email address on Paypal a while back, and these 3 mails all came to my OLD email address, but all other mails from Paypal come to my current address, as do receipts when buy things. Could these be fake? When I got the first one, I assumed it was above board and sent he item out! I'm woried this is going to happen to all of the items I've listed and my money's getting lost somewhere. I've tried all of the settings I can think of and my old email address is nowhere to be seen. PLEASE HELP!!

You will be able to get through to PayPal tomorrow.

First of all, please look at your ebay account</> and check the email address that is registered there.

Now check your Paypal account. Is it the same email address in every way?

Be aware that fake emails do get sent supposedly from Paypal (they aren't) saying that payment has been received, so it is possible. However this is not common. Have you had the 'sold' notifications from eBay and are they in your ebay messages as well as your email?

Are your items high value? Such a scam is usually aimed at expensive goods.

If you want to, you can forward a copy of your paypal email to me (black out the personal info!) -

[email protected]

and I will check it for you to see if it is a fake.
Hi scoobysoo, You need to make sure that the email address you are using is the same for both ebay and paypal.

Sign in to ebay using your username and password.

When you have signed in, you will see, on the Left Hand side, My ebay View. Scroll down to My Account and click on Personal Information. Where it says email and contact information, click on it, and look at the email address - it is your old email or your new email address? If it's wrong, click on EDIT and change it.

Do the same for your paypal account.

If you have any problems, let us all know, and we will try and help further. I know that when you send an email to them for help, you may have to wait up to 2 days for a reply.
p.s. If it is a FAKE email (that is supposedly from paypal), it will usually start with something like........ DEAR PAYPAL MEMBER, . (and may say things like your account is in danger, act now and click here - or other such rubbish).

If it is a PROPER, TRUE EMAIL FROM PAYPAL it will ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, address you by your FULL NAME,.....as in...... DEAR FREDERICK BLOGGS, you have received a payment from...........

if you open an email, and think for one minute that it is a fake because it says Dear paypal member (or whatever), rather than YOUR FULL CHRISTIAN NAME AND SURNAME, click on FORWARD, DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING IN THE EMAIL, (or add anything), and forward it to [email protected] They will be in touch with you in a very, very, short space of time, to let you know whether it was a spoof or not. I have always found them extremely helpful in detecting spoof email, which keep us all safe. They have experts to deal with such rubbish.
The Winner - that is not quite true.

If the payment has been made to an email address not registered with PayPal - it can happen and does, often - then PayPal do not know your name, and address you by your email address.

I have seen the contents of the email, it looks genuine, and have asked for the email headers to be sure.
Chances are that its not fake emails, but an ongoing problem with PayPal and ebay.

Are you using TurboLister when you do the listings?

I changed my email address with both ebay and PayPal many months ago, but did some listings in August using TurboLister and forgot to fully select the PayPal payment option. The result was that several buyers paid via PayPal but I couldnt receive the funds. I could no longer access the old email to check whether any payments had been received there.

I phoned PayPal, who said that the old email address was still there, even though I couldnt see any trace of it ... they get a very large number of people calling about the same problem, I was told. Too much to hope that they might consider doing something about it! I then went to ebays live help (you have to go to ebay.com to use that), and they said that they couldnt get rid of the old email address!

In the end I had to ask the winning buyers to cancel the payment theyd sent and asked them to re-send the payment by using PayPals request funds option, and then I amended the listings which had no bids on them yet to make sure it didnt happen again.

If you look on the ebay Community boards youll find a lot more about this ... New To Selling is probably the best one to look at.
The Winner - you are not strictly correct.

If payment is made to an email address that is not registered with PayPal - which can and does happen - then PayPal do not have the details such as the name,

In those cases, PayPal address the email using the email address as the name.

I have seen the email, it looks real, but I have asked for the email header so I can be certain.

I would say that scoobysoo has a different email address on her eBay account to her registered PayPal email.
The Winner - your are wrong partly.

If the payment is made to an email address that is not registered with PayPal - which can and does happen - then PayPal don't know the personal details and address the payee by email address.

My guess is that scoobysoo has a different email address registered with PayPal to eBay.

If I go into EBay/My EBay/Personal Information - email address is correct

If I go into PayPal/Profile/Emal - email address is correct

Is there anywhere else it could be listed?

Problem solved (almost). I went to EBay Live as suggested, and found out that it was because EBay automatically puts the last email address you sol something with onto the actual listing template, so this is what I need to change, and need to ask the buyers to cancel their payments and send a new one...although one of them's already got the item, so i guess that depends how honest they are! Thanks for all your advise
