How were metric measurements invented, who invented them?

Length was based on the idea that the distance from the pole to the equator was 10,000 km and you worked out all the smaller lengths from that. Of course, this value varies according to where you measure it, so now a metre is defined as the distance travelled by light, in a vacuum, in 1/299,792,458th of a second. You just need a really good stopwatch!!
