Car Exhausts

I think my car exhaust might have a hole in it, apart from sounding like an F1 racing car what other "symptoms" would my car have? And how much is it likely to cost to fix it (VW golf, mk4)? Ta

Being a girl i don't want to look stupid if they tell me the car is fine (like when i took it in becuase i though something was stuck in the brakes and it turned out to be the ABS) and if there are other symptoms i would know if that is also happening and if it's likely my exhaust is broken - and i don't have the time to just pop in whenever i want. A rough guide as to price was also asked becuase i don't know how much these things cost and i don't have the money right now to just go and get someone to look at it and mend it. If questions like this annoy you why waste your time answering them? Oh and by the way it's Kwik Fit. Thanks for the advice from the other though, and as yousef points out, kwikfit are renowned for skanking people (and i know because my ex worked there) if i have a rough idea, i'll know what to expect. The noise isn't mega loud, just more so that i've noticed it and don't usually, also it is slow to pull away. I will be taking it to kwik fit on friday (pay day and my day off).
Exhausts come in many parts, it might be just one part that is a bit iffy. I must say I have always been impressed with my local Kwik-Fit, always good advice and very reasonable. When every they suggest something else needs fixing at the same time I always decline and they don't go into hard sell they just say OK.
OK becks, sorry. Your Q did not "annoy me", if it had I would not have responded as politely. An old trick is to put something over the tail pipe (while the engine is running), like a rag and try to stop the exhaust emission. If there is a leak, it can be heard hissing from the hole. Better still, be patient and just listen for it getting worse. When you know its holed, take it in. Friends? :o)
