Office "dress codes"....CODE?

"Dress code" Why CODE? Do you need an enigma machine or do some employers have thieir heads where a head isnt supposed to go?
Personally I think you can dress how you wish to work, so long as it doesn't contravene healt and safety - the neck tie is unsafe and suits tend not to get washed, wheras a pair of jeans and TShirt can be washed frequently.

I once worked in a call centre, not customer facing at all, where office wear was strictly enforced, us women weren't even allowed to wear vest type tops, ie no exposing the tops of the arms....I mean...WHAT???

I'm sure you're joking, but if not -- The older use of "code" is to describe a systematically arranged list of rules or procedures -- so we have the Code of Hammurabi, the code of law, etc.
The wotd was later used to describe a systematically arranged set of rules for sending or deciphering a secret message.
It can still mean a set of rules for another purpose - such as acceptable work dress, which in my case at least, has to please the clientelle, not just myself, or I'd wear my nightdress every day.

I personally think that wearing work clothes puts you in a work frame of mind, just as wearing clubbing clothes or party clothes makes you feel like you're going to have a good night. And wearing sloppy clothes, like pyjamas, dressing gown or an old tracksuit makes you feel in a lounging around frame of mind. I think it helps to differentiate between work time and home time.
