When I turn on the hot water tap, hot water flows, but there is a very loud noise, a bit like the sound of a lorry engine! It disappears when the tap is turned off. Can anyone advise, please.

Sounds like you could have air in your waterpipes or possibly the pressure is too high. Have you had your water turned off for any reason recently? Try adjusting the water pressure, or keep the tap running for a while. it will be a waste of hot water, but it might work.
The noise is caused by either a loose/worn tap washer or jumper somewhere in the hot water system maybe a tap or a valve near the boiler etc or as previously suggested air in the system.
Is the water very very hot? If the temperature is too high the water can actually boil when the pressure is released while the tap is open.

If so get your thermostat checked.
