A few years ago my neighbour warned me that he could hear my telephone conversations on his radio when I used the remote handset on my BT phone. Do the new digital phones solve this problem?

Hardly new, but yes, they should do.
Yes They definately do solve your problem and are cheap as chips these days.
All cordless phones are in fact radio transmitters, it's how they send the signal to the base unit and onto the phone line. As such they can all be listened to given the right equipment. The older analogue phones were more easily listened to than todays dect phones but they are not a secure means of communication. If you want privacy from casual snoopers then the only way is to use a traditional wired handset phone.
