Sat Nav. Navman S30

I have just bought a Navman S30 Sat Nav and tried it out locally where I obviousley know the way etc. When leaving a normal road to go onto a dual carriageway the voice said "to join the motorway". It seems to classify any dual cariageway as a motorway. If I was in an area I didn't know, I would be confused by this, and be expecting to see a motorway and assume I should be joining one. Has anyone got this model, or any other sat nav and experienced the same. There is litle in the way of instructions, though the unit was a doddle to set up, pretty much plug and play. I gather there is a manual available to download, but doubt this wil change the in-built voice instruction. Finaly, the screen is very bright and quite a distraction at night, reflecing on the windscreen. Can the screen be turned off whilst still having the audible instructions?

I've got a Navman 530N which is now quite ancient! You should have in the options a nightmode which you can set to automatic. It will give a much less bright display. You can also reduce the brightness manually and 'save' it.

As far as identifying a dual carriage way as motorway I cannot assist you. Mine identifies correctly.

Many thanks for your answer. Have now been onto the Navman website to view the full manual, and found what you refer to re the brightness adjustment. Will have to see if anyone has problem re incorrect id of dual cariageways. Cheers

I had a go for a few days with a friends old Tom Tom recently.

I noticed that once it told me to join the motorway when I was joining a fast dual carriageway.

I can't say that it really confused me or caused a problem.

Some of the other stupid things it told me to do were far sillier. It confirms that you can't switch your mind off when using a Sat Nav. Those that do end up driving onto railway lines or deep fords.

Because I was trying it out for first time on a 50 mile route I knew well, being told I was joining the motorway when it was a fast dual carriageway wasn't a problem, as I knew it was a mistake. But if I am in unknown territory and joining a large island with many exits, which include motorways, it might be more confusing as althoughj the voice may tell you to take say the third exit (a dual carriageway) if it then said and join the motorway, it would be easy to opt for the motorway thinking the exit number info was perhaps wrong. No doubt I will get used to it.

Regarding motorways, it says the same thing in my built in Sat Nav (Audi).

I think it is because it beeps if travelling over 70 mph (WHICH CAN NOT BE TURNED OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

As a duel carriageway and motorway holds similar road traffic laws, I imagine it it is to makes things easier.

I know what you mean though. How hard can it be to programme it to say "Enter the duel carriageway"????

The Tom Tom tried to take me onto a motorway via a 'Works Only' entrance.

It also told me to go the wrong way round a roundabout!

Technology!! Perhaps I should stick to using maps!! They have worked for me for the last 30 years. Thanks to all for your feedback
