Broadband -v- telephone compatability

Hi,
My elderly mum has an BT landline and broadband service. She needs a replacement telephone which gives a visual indicator of any 1571 messages. At present she has one main BT phone socket to which there are three telephone extensions and connection to the internet via BT broadband. This all works well apart from the fact that her main landline telephone needs replacing as mentioned. I have tried 3 separate brand new telephones (ordinary non-answerphone type but with 1571 visual display). As soon as the new phone is plugged in you cannot use the internet and there is an error message similar to ".......no dial up tone detected".
I emailed BT about the problem, but I received a reply saying they didn't understand the question! I have also phoned them as the new telephones were BT models and the existing one is also a BT model (albeit an old version, but worked perfectly well alongside broadband). They said something about having a REN value no higher than 4 - well replacing the new phone would still give the same REN so I don't see how that should make any difference. She is really struggling as she wants to be able to use the internet as well as have a nice new shiney phone.
