How do I check a cars history?

How would I check the history of a 1964 car. I have put the VIN in to a search site but this will only search 17 digit VIN's which were introduced in the 80's. The VIN I have has only got 9 digits. I have also placed the registration No in to the dvla site but this only tells me when the car was first registered, in the UK, along with the manufacturer. The car was imported in to the UK in the 80's from South Africa.

Hi, Myself I have a site called TIS it is a site for BMWs ( No, I do not Brag the car is 10 yrs old) Find a site that deal with your car from the Maufactors, Dealers, Last owners, then their History of the car then work off that. Good Luck
