I have a theory that American men pee sitting down.
I have been to the USA several times and every WC pan which I have seen (in public toilets and in private homes) is designed in such a way that the water in the bowl comes almost up to the underside of the rim. Consequently, it is impossible to use the toilet without it sounding like Niagara Falls.
Most European toilets are designed so that there is a certain surface area of porcelain to "cushion" and silence the flow.
Is my theory correct or have I been doing it wrong all these years?
My cats noticed that about American toilets. They used to drink out of them all the time (and yes I did try to stop them!) They can't do it here because the water is too far away.
Good theory as to why, I'd never thought of that one..
OK, I accept that my theory is wrong. But what do American men do in there? Do they sing loudly or have severe fits of coughing to drown the sound? Surely you agree that my observations about the design of American toilets are correct?
Well, in every toilet i've been to, the water has never been that high. The guys don't use toilets to pee in anyway, they just use the urinals across from the toilets.
Probably the only time I've seen a toilet with water that high was when it was clogged.
Not answering your question, but I once went into some public loo's in Venice Beach L.A, and the 6 toilets were situated along the walls with no cubicles! Imagine having to do your business infront of a load of other people doing theirs. Eeuuucchhh.
Hey SteveD - when I was in America, the water in the toilet was as high as you're suggesting and I had terrible trouble yelling "Green Grow the Rushes - Oh" at the top of my voice so that no-one could hear what I was doing. In the bathroom. Just after I'd said, "I'm going for a wee". Anyway, the Urinal Theory of bettertulips (better tulips than one?) is all very well and good (but applies all over the world) but what about at home? Surely the crazy people don't have urinals in home bathrooms?
Steve, Steve, Steve, bettertulips is right , men don't sit to pee, for God's sake! they just make a lot of noise, and it's no big deal, at least, i've never lost sleep over it. besides, a lot of the bathrooms get the fan running when you turn the light on so it muffles the noise, again, not a big deal.
This is a funny string... y'know, I have never thought about men here peeing loudly, nor have I ever paid attention to the sound of men peeing in the toilet. Maybe it's just a cultural difference about what's embarrassing?
