sorry didnt know where to post this. trying to plan for a relatives future cremation from abroad! my elderly aunt didnt want a funeral, at the moment she is very sick in a home and we are expecting the worst. because we wont be able to get there straight away to sort things out, im wanting to know how things work. she just wants for me and my hubby to cremate her and scatter her ashes privately. so where would the body be taken if she died at the home,?im assuming undertakers wouldnt be involved if we didnt want a funeral. and how long does it take to get ashes after the cremation? i feel awful asking all this as god bless her she is still with us but it will be good to have the logistics of it in my head. also if anyone has arranged similar, would be good to know how it was arranged etc. thank you.

You don't need an undertaker if you are there and able to 'diy' or have somebody else do it for you.

But you need to plan in advance - buy a coffin. A cardboard flatpack will do; arrange transportation - an estate car or van;
storage - the council morgue will, for a fee; book the cremation - no need for a service; register the death.

The only reason undertakers are so widely used is because people are squeamish,

Please be aware that the coffin will not be allowed to be opened as their has been no hygiene treatment (embalming).

Oh - you can get the ashes within a week - usually two or three days if you collect

i envisaged that her body would be taken to the crematorium and me and hubby would just be standing there as the body went through the curtains. she said she didnt want any fuss and just me to sort it out when the time came.i did think that the home would send the body to the hospital if we didnt want undertakers. can i then assume that undertakers would then take her body to the crematorium or would the hospital just send it? god, i hate to even think about it, had not even thought of a coffin but suppose there has to be something to put her in, just dont think i am thinking straight.shes the last of my close family, my godmother too and was like a mother to me. shes 95 god bless her.

Unless she dies in hospital, the hospital morgue won't want to keep her.

I suggest you contact a funeral director at the time and explain exactly what you want. It can be very simple indeed - you don't need a service. But the director will look after her very well and organise it all.

you can ger the ashes the next day if you want them, but about teh rest i dont know

thanks everyone, i phoned the crematorium today and im almost clear on everything. an undertaker at some point does have to get involved to make the process easier.
