Learning to Drive

I've been learning to drive recently with a driving instructor but the other day I got my dad to let me drive the car. He was pushy and didn't give me any clear and concise instructions, basically it was a nightmare. Has anybody else had bad experiences like this whilst learning to drive??

What stage of learning to drive are you at ? Are you ok with changing gear, lanes, hazard awareness and being in control of the car ? If not, then please only drive with your instructor until s/he feels you have good car control. You need to be able to anticipate problems well before they happen and react accordingly (and fairly automatically) before you can cope with *pushy* instructions... Unless your dad is an experienced driving instructor (or an advanced driver), he is unlikely to be able to provide you with the necessary tuition you need right now - it is very easy to pass on *bad habits*.... (sorry Will's Dad !)

DO NOT DRIVE WITH DAD IN THE PASSENGER SEAT.

It will end in tears. I bet dad hasn't been in that seat for years, and there is a totally different perception of the road when sat there.

Your dad will not know how to deliver concise and clear instructions in advance. He will be stressed and uptight, and most dads always 'know best' and will not listen to you. He probably says things like 'Watch the revs!' without telling you what revs are.

Husbands teaching wives to drive often ends in divorce. Or murder.

When you have passed your test and have your own car, you may drive your dad. But be sure to tell him to shut up before he starts.

Sounds like normal family life to me.

Definately don't drive with Dad in the passenger seat! I echo everything Ethel says (except the murder part)!

I can honestly tell you things don't get any better after passing either. I eventually told my Dad to button it LOL.

Just after my 17th birthday my dad told me to get driving lessons and that he wouldn't help me to learn to drive as I would pick up his bad habits and he said that a driving instructor will teach you the proper way to drive, he never did help me even when I used his car after I passed and then 6 months later I written it off, ooppssss...

was it your car or your dads car?
i bought my son a car put it in his name he insured it i taxed it, i taught him the basics from day 1 then told him to have lessons so he can be told of his wrongdoings
he had 4 lessons & the instructor didn't ask him to reverse ,3 point turn,etc he was a waste of money & time
so we carried on every weekend driving about & manouvering when he thought he was good enough he applied for his test -THEN booked a few more lessons with another school, he had 1 month till the test -which was cancelled on the day, so that peed him off, & took it 10 days later & passed 1st time, so be a bit more sympathetic to some of us dads, were not all nightmares. some of us stay with our partners as well, through thick & thin.
just wait till the Daughter wants to learn, HELP.

It was my Dads car. He hasn't wanted me to drive it for most of the time I have been learning but Sunday was the first, and probably the last, time I'll be driving his car. I believe it's a mutual decision.
