Dell Laptop Configurations
5 Answers
I'm venturing into the world of laptops, having decided to replace my 12 year old Dell tower unit. It's mainly for general domestic use, i.e, photo's, music, documents, etc. Not planning on gaming.
Not being a computer wizard, I could do with some clarification please!
Can't decide if I need 4096MB RAM or if just 2098MB will be enough. All that much really useful?
Unsure whether to go for a Dell Inspiron 1525 or a Studio 15.
And finally, what's the difference between all these different wireless cards? Surely they all do the same job?
Many thanks in advance!

Memory is increased to 2 Gb which is all you really need to run Vista.
You don't need dual core with huge memory of 4 Gb and fancy 256Mb graphics cards unless you are into serious online multi-tasking work or gaming.
This ill do the job otherwise

Sorry!! forgot the wireless part.
Wireless??" We done need no steenking wireless!!"
Seriously - if you ever need wireless, you just pop in to your nearest friendly Maplin or Argos and buy a wireless dongle for about a tenner. As long as you are close to the transmitter (Hub) you'll be ok.
You wan to drive aroun London and look for hotspots or sit at heathrow and download music THEN you need a fancy built-in wireless card - otherwise w**k w**k!!
Cheers

Cheers for that. Appreciated.
The wireless comes as standard to all laptops now I think. No option to remove it. However, it lists about 4 different ones. Is there any difference really or do I just need the more expensive one if I intend to drive around London or Heathrow doing loads of stuff I don't intend to be doing anyway?!

I have a Dell Latitude D620.........good for this site as it has wifi but not much good for anything else! Can't see any videos recommended here as the Flash player wont work, even after endless downloads. Doesn't burn CDs (only reads) so have to transfer to burner via memory stick.
That's the trouble with Dell's they ask you what u want and ONLY give you that, then later you wish you'd asked for more.
Get another make of laptop with a full spec and no limits.

Fair comment ... however....
I have bought 5 dell laptops in the last year. All worked well except for problems with cd drive on (coincidently, a 1525!!) one. Dell collected, replaced and returned within 5 days. Worked fine thereafter.
The spec mentioned before includes a Cd drive that can burn. Can view dvds. Has basic wireless which works.
Why buy a porsche to drive around London and go to the shops when a smaller (cheaper!!) car will do the job
