No, it will not prevent you coughing up phlegm, but if you've got one I'd avoid going into an MRI scanner!

I'm not a medical man but from many years of watching Casualty and Holby I think I have an answer!

Poor heart function and concomitant poor circulation can lead to a build-up of fluid in the lungs (pleural effusion?) - fitting a device to pace the heart will improve circulation and prevent this fluid build-up.
