For anyone who read children's books in the 80's. Please help if you can.

When i was a little bit smaller than i am (now sometime in the 80's), I vaguely remember reading a series of books that i would love to re read now. Can you help me ? They are thin,hardback maybe 5 or 6 inches square each with a diferent colour as a boarder to an illustration set centre on the front cover. I remember a blue one, a red one and think there may have been a green one. The stories as far as i remember where about a little fella who lived under some stairs of a house. At night he and other creatures came out. One of the stories ( I think) was about a pet canary being killed by a bogart but i may well be wrong. The Illustrations are scatchy like etchings and the books were quite dark for children's books. I understand that my memory is vague. But if you think you know anymore about them, so i can try and hunt a set down please let me know.
