Just suppose you murdered your grandfather............
21 Answers
..........after you had travelled back in time (after the advent of time-machines, of course) before he had had any children? Where does that leave you? How could your childless grandfather be murdered by one of his grandchildren?
Modern research into quantum physics has proposed one way around this paradox by viewing the universe as a `multiverse` in which all possible histories happen simultaneously. A time traveller could then travel into the past, but only into the past of another parallel universe in which he, a time traveller who was not born there, kills his grandfather. This theory is gaining acceptance among quantum physicists and has contributed to a renaissance of scientific interest in how the laws of physics could permit time travel.
Idea of time travel was first considered scientifically as a result of Einstein`s theory, which demonstrated that gravity warps the fabric of space-time. The same theory also said that under certain circumstances, such as inside a rotating black hole, the warping becomes so severe that space-time is torn and folded back on itself, providing pathways into the past.
Makes you think, dunnit?

You'd have to first accept the possibility of time travel, THEN the possibility of other dimensions, in which there would be absolutely NO reason why the same people would veen have been born. When you consider the odds one particular person has to overcome before they're born, in ONE set of circumstances, how can that happen in a completely different set?
If "parallel" dimensions really exist, there is absolutey NO chance, statistically, that our worlds would be similar.
The mere fact that us, humans, can even THINK about such a possibility, though, is exactly what makes us humans.

No, no Mrs C, Tiger, this subject of parallel universes and time is fascinating. You don`t need to be a physicist to understand, or even partially understand what they`re talking about. I`m no brain-box, I just read a lot. I`ll tell a real-life story (no now `cos every night from 9 to 11 pm I play chess with Richard- I do neglect him a lot and it`s the least I can do! just joking) tomorrow about when I met my 2nd husband. I`ll call it, hmmmm, let`s see, Ah, The White Gloves, OK. Bye for now, love you, Tinx xx
tigerlily....even if you killed your grandfather after he had fathered either one of your parents, that brings the chances of you existing to nill. Your "original" mother/father would have been in a totally different frame of mind, nevermind having become a completely different person, which means your parents would probably never have met/produced a child.
Woooo I'm talking about after your mum/dad is born. Many people who parents were murdered grow up to have children of their own. But what if a discription of the killer was given tha matched you?
Where would that leave your mum/dad. Knowing your killed their parent by going back in time.
Leaves you with a whole new load of thoughts.
Do you kill the child for killing you parent?
Well its getting a bit late for this one. I'll leave you to it.

Jayne: I read, also that all events that have ever happened in time are all happening still, that there`s no such thing as past, present or future.
Max: If parallel universes are truly parallel, that if they differ from one another in only one respect, there must be countless adjacent universes (multiverses) that disagree with this one only in a single detail, and not a very significant detail at that. I have no doubt that these multiverses exist. From two separate ways which, if you`re interested, I`ll post tomorrow under WHITE GLOVES.
As living creatures we find ourselves confined in a world that appears to have 4 dimensions, three of space and one of time. But John Bennett has a theory of a 5th dimension. In his autobiography WITNESS he describes how he was fascinated by Einstein`s hypothesis that space-time must be some kind of material substance with the apparently impossible property of travelling in all directions at once at the speed of light. The 5th dimension must be as real as the space and time we know. But the extra degree of freedom given by the 5th dimension opens all kinds of possibilities. It means that time itself is not unique and that if there is more than one time there is more than one future. If there are many times, there would be the possibility of choosing between them. In each line of time, there can be a strict causality, but by changing from one line to another we can be free. It is like a railway passenger, as long as he remains on one train his destination is decided in advance. But he can change the train at a junction and so decide his destination. If you`re interested tomorrow I`ll post how to positively hop from one universe to another.
