how to find the number of a mobile phone

Hubby wants to start using a pay as you go phone that has sat in a drawer for a long time. None of us is sure of the number - he can't put any credit on it till he finds it.

I think there's a way of retrieving the number using the phone - can anyone help please, before I take it into a phone shop?

Sorry, we have actually tried to register a new sim card, but to do that they ask you for the phone's IEMI (?) number, and we can't read it off the phone(its underneath battery) and it's so tiny you really can't make it out.

I can see my mobile phone number in the settings. What make/model is yours?

Some you dial a sequence of numbers.

it's got a sim card in it, it's ready to use - but there's no credit on it.
Chuckfikens - tried that, there's no number stored in special numbers.

Oh dear, looks like I'll have to take it to a shop. Thanks for trying to help anyway.
