Playing store bought DVD movies in playstation 2 system

Ihave a playstation 2 system. I have many store bought dvd movies I want to play in this system. For some reason it says it can't read them.What do I need to do, to get my dvd movies to play? It plays my games fine. Please help if you can. Thank you in advance!
