Can I use a 2GB SD Memory card in my Panasonic DMC-FZ5 camera? The manual says 1GB is the maximum, but I wondered if that is because its rather out of date, and there used not to be memory cards bigger than 1GB.

I am using a 4GB card in my FZ8 which I think is only a later version of the FZ5. As you say, memory cards capacity has advanced a lot in the last few years.
it should work OK

1gb and 2gb SD cards are standard card... anything above 2gb is a HDSD card and it almost certainly won't work with them though
I'm not sure how that system works but in the past the number of bits or byte gave you the max address that could be found. ie something simple: an 8 bit byte would give 256 addresses or 11111111. I would think the procedure has not changed much.
