Not sure if this is the right sight or not but does anybody know the speed that most ships and ferries travel at. Preferably in MPH.

This link takes you to the first of 72 pages of photographs of ships and ferries, with accompanying technical data:
http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/myalbum/vi ewcat.php?uid=23058

If you look through the first few pages, you'll see that typical (conventional) ferry speeds are roughly in the range of 21 knots (24mph) to 27 knots (31mph).

'Fast ferries' often have a cruising speed of around 37 knots (43mph) but vessels such as this one have a service speed of around 52 knots (60mph), with a top speed of 56 knots (64mph):

Supertankers typically operate (when fully laden) at around 16 knots (18mph).
