Sky TV installation and chip in doorstep

I was at a friends house on Sunday and he was showing me his new Sky TV installation. He went on to show me a small chip that the engineer had installed into the doorstep leading into his back garden. Although he asked the engineer what it was for, apparently, the engineer would not say, or possibly he couldn't be bothered to explain. The chip (if thats what it is) is about 1/3rd inch across. a small hole was drilled into outside the edge of the doorstep very low down and whatever the device is was pushed into the drilled hole. Can anyone tell me what it does?

sorry cant tell you what it is butget your friend to phone sky and ask them to explain, never heard of that before, please keep us informed

if the guy would or couldn't tell him what the chip was for , myself i would have told him to remove it or take it out myself i
if contacting sky had proven fruitless about it

Talking about removing things and taking things off..........I made what I thought a funny quip to this post last evening and although it appeared in answers to this question...when I looked a few moments ago it had been removed. All I said was perhaps it was Big Brother watching you watching what you were watching through that little thing on the front of your Sky+ box going round and round and round.

Sky don't need a chip to do that, your digibox is connected to the phoneline which is in contact with them!

Thank you Coastie. Yeah, I'm aware of that even though I don't have Sky myself. As a matter of fact, I have just returned from their house and he has just left the thing where it was put. It just seemed to have no connection with Sky so we wondered why it was put there. He does'nt seem to care and his wife told him to leave it alone. orders are orders :)
