hello fo3 nix, ive posted a help me with my mac b4, and got no reaction. ive been living i madrid for almost 2 1/2 yrs, and finally got a place to live with wi-fi connection. but ive been going around in circles for 6 weeks trying to connect. its the configuring part to wi-fi i cant do, and advice is non-existent. if you cud meet me in madrid for a caa, id be grateful, and relieved
I live in England, not Madrid.
But I can help you on here.
You should have an airport icon top-right of your screen. It'll either look like a triangular wedge of cheese, or some curved grey stripes.
Click it, and either choose the option to turn airport on (if a triangular wedge of cheese), or let it scan and choose the name of the wifi you want to connect to.
If this wireless signal has a password, a window will appear asking you for it. Enter this, and hopefully it'll work (and at least part of the grey lines will turn black to show signal).

OK, can you do the following for me please:
Click the apple logo top-left of screen, then 'About this Mac'.
What does is say just under 'Mac OS X'? Also, what does it show for processor and memory?
Next, click the 'more info' button. This opens system profiler.
It should say 'hardware overview' at the top of the right pane in this window. What does it show for model name and model identifier?
Click the 'network' item in the left pane of this window. What does it list as 'active services'?

Have you tried contacting your local Mac User Group.

thanx milvus, but i havent much faith in these type of groups. they all talk a language i dont understand. i remember going a couple of meetings about 4 years ago, and it was full of boffins.
it would be nice to find a group who speaks plain english. anyway i did contact an english group, but have received 20 emails about a problem from somebody else which i dont understand. quantum physics would be easier to fathom out.

Sorry about late posting. Didn't notice that you'd replied with details.
You want to buy an Apple Airport Extreme Card.
Amazon.co.uk sells them for about 25. I assume Amazon.co.es (?) or some other similar retailer does too. Just make sure it matches the name above.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-M8881-Airport-Ex treme-Card/dp/tech-data/B0000AT9MB/ref=de_a_sm td
You can also find them on ebay for the same kind of price.
Next, you want to download the manual for your eMac:
http://support.apple.com/manuals/#emac
(Just check when you bought your model; I've checked and even the earliest model will support this card.)
To install it, according to the manual it's a simple matter of removing a little panel and pushing the network card into a slot.
I'll keep watching this question so reply if you have further questions :)

hi fo3 nix, and other mac users. well im at my wits end. living in madrid, theres really no advice. anyway i was in brum last weekend. and visited a mac shop. after booking an appointment to see a genius. i was told i should buy a plug-in airport extreme. i was told all i got to do is plug it in and connect it to my emac with the usb cables, and id be sorted. im not. apparently the bloody airport extreme has a light which keeps flashing amber, it needs to be blue i beleive. help!!!
They've misunderstood you or something.
The Airport Base Station is something entirely different.
Here's what you need to 'get wifi':
1) Some device that takes in your phone line internet signal, and broadcasts it out, to create a wifi signal. Usually this is in the form of a wireless router. The Airport Base Station is Apple's router (any other router should work with your Mac too, not just Apple ones). It's a good router, if a bit overpriced.
2) You also need some device in your Mac to receive these wifi signals. This is what you don't have, and is the Airport Extreme Card that I have given a link to (amazon link) above.
Without (2), you'll be going nowhere fast.
So you need to do this: buy the Airport Extreme card that I link to. Just make sure it looks like the one I have linked to on amazon. Once you have this, you can read the eMac manual and it's a simple job of popping off the front plate of your eMac, and inserting this card inside your Mac.

hi again fo3 nix, re: airport extreme card, ive gone ahead and bought it from ebay. now you say its very simple to fit, well looking at the reviews from amazon, it isnt, unless you are a mac technician. plus i dont know where my emac book is, surely the card will come with suggested fitting instructions, or will i be able to find something on the net.
i wont be able to tell you how things are going for at least a month. cuz living in spain, ive had to send the card to a uk address, and then wait for it to arrive here in spain.
fingers crossed.
one last thing, mac are clever, they say on the receipt, no refund if the packaging has been opened. so im stuck with 80 quids worth of something i dont need

I have linked to a manual for your eMac above :)
On page 41 (I think), are the instructions for adding an Airport Express card. If it's in the Apple manual, it must be pretty straightforward. Good luck!
If you have more issues in a month's time, start a new question --- this one will have long disappeared from my screen.
