Can a television picture tube be repaired? Or, when it goes and there is no picture, does that mean that the tv should be thrown out. I still have sound.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.the symptoms of a worn tube are usually: excessively dark picture that can't be corrected by raising the g2 voltage on the Line transformer, smeary colours (usually red pulling to the right of white objects), poor colour balance.
If there's no pic it is likely to be exactly what smorodina said.
Best advice would be TAKE the set to a decent technician, so you will be able to make a proper repair decision based on FACTS not internet guesses and speculation. Or see www.repairfaq.org if you want to learn more.
Good luck!
sounds like a bad connection to the heaters - I've seen this many times.Usually a bit of soldering is needed, no more.
Another cause may be the little circuit board at the back of the tube has dirty connections where it meets the tube pins - can cause similar symptoms.
You could easily save this set from the landfill, if you are no good with a soldering iron get it to a reliable technician.
Good luck!
