In the remake of the film The Dambusters, the name of Guy Gibson's mascot dog has had to have a name change. They are not allowed to call him 'Nig ger' - instead they have to call him Nidge. Apparently his original name is unacceptable in Hollywood. Someone suggested calling him Digger instead of Nig ger - you can bet if that were the case, you wouldn't get levelheaded Aussies complaining about it. This is old news - but I've only just read about it. Do people think this is political incorrectness gone silly, or a perfectly reasonable decision?

Nearly as bad as "Baa baa green sheep" when I worked with nursery kids LOL

Being of the generation of kids that were brought up on stories about people being dragged off into woods and having their hearts cut out or old biddies getting baked in ovens or eaten by wild animals (Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, Red Riding Hood respectively) I think the world has gone a bit PC.

PS I am a normal mother of two not some weirdo after a traumatic upbringing! LOL
A BIT PC. sage?

Hardly news either

In 1999, British television network ITV broadcast a censored version of the film, with all utterances of "******" (historical name of the unit's dog mascot) removed. ITV blamed regional broadcaster London Weekend Television, which in turn alleged that a junior staff member had been responsible for the unauthorised cuts. When ITV again showed a censored version in June 2001, it was condemned by Index on Censorship as "unnecessary and ridiculous" and that the edits introduced continuity errors.[9]

U.K.'s Channel 4 screened the censored American version in July 2007, in which the dialogue was dubbed so as to call the dog Trigger, this screening taking place just after the 2008 remake was announced. For the remake, Peter Jackson has said no decision has been made on the dog's name, but is in a "no-win, damned-if-you-do-and-damned-if-you-don't scenario", as changing the name could be seen as political correctness, while not changing the name could offend people. In September 2007, as part of the BBC Summer of British Film series, The Dam Busters was shown at selected cinemas across the UK in its uncut format.

So it was shown across uk in 2007 .
