How do I remove old heat stains from table

I have accumulated stains on my polished table. I believe they are from putting hot food immediately on the table. The stains are smudgy and leaves greyish blobs. I have heard about using cigar ash to remove them, but as the stains are very old, this has not worked.

Does anybody have any other ideas of what I could use to remove these marks?

Thanks.

Thank you so very much. Tried ironing over a cotton pillow case at a low temperature and all the stains came out. Brilliant.
my mum always used ash
Try a shelled brazil nut! bite it in half so you rub the oil onto the surface. this is tried and tested, it worked on my table.
